Let's first get something straight about the word above. The name and place is Ghana[ gah-nuh, gan-uh ], an African nation located in the western area of Africa, not Guyana [ gahy-an-uh, -ah-nuh ] a country located in the northern areas of South America. From my tone you can already see that I want to dispel some myths and misconceptions about Ghana.
Let's do this then🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
Africa is a place that conjures up mixed feelings for many. When I think of Africa, I see rich lush green landscapes with exotic plants and great wild animals that roam massive stretches of lands and massive mountains with peaks covered in snow, but sadly with all this beauty I can also see the poverty and violence that I think many of us can all too easily recall because of the media. Obviously, I am not about to say these things do not happen or are untrue but is there any place you can think of that these things don't occur. Exactly, you can't name one because every nation on earth has these elements. We're not going to get into the degrees of violence and poverty because poor is poor and violence is violence. It's not wanted or pretty in any place that it exists. I'm pretty sure you guessed what myth no.1 is?
AFRICA IS DANGEROUS AND VIOLENT.
Remember that all nations have crime, violence and poverty. Each of them have their ways of dealing with these elements of society. Although crime can happen in any place at any time, staying safe is a matter of common sense. You shouldn't venture into unknown areas alone and at late hours of the night. Also it is a good idea to keep abreast of the travel warnings that tell you which countries, cities and borders to avoid and which are safe. It is also wise to travel with professionals who have years of experience operating as a leading escorted tour operator and are very familiar with the areas and the people of Ghana. I chose GoWay Travel who's professionalism and expertise has kept them in business over 45 years, to handle our tours and keep us safe while in Ghana.
FYI....You should know where the U.S. Embassy is located in any area that you travel to. Here's the address of the US Embassy in the city of Accra.
No.24 Fourth Circular Road
Cantonments, Accra, Ghana
AFRICA IS ONE COUNTRY.
Some of us may look at the continent of Africa and see this great stretch of land and think it is all one country. Instead you have to look at Africa as being similar to the U.S. in that we have a great mass of land with 50 smaller states that make up North America and governed under one leader. While in Africa, they have 54 smaller countries that make up the continent of Africa and each country has its own leader.
THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH IN GHANA.
Africa has over one billion residents from many different areas of the world so you can imagine that there are many different languages and dialects spoken in this country at any given time. To give you a clearer perspective, Africa has over 2000 spoken languages. As for us English speaking travelers, Ghana's official language for business and school is English so we won't have any language barrier problems when visiting this country.
WE NEED 20 VACCINATIONS TO VISIT AFRICA.
Truth is as a child living in the U.S., you may have gotten the bulk of the vaccines needed for your best health and as long as you're up to date on your vaccinations here then you'd be happy to know that you'd only need one other. Ghana requires you to have a certificate of vaccination of Yellow Fever in order to enter their country. Along with this, the CDC suggests some others just to be on the safer side. Those vaccines suggested are TDAP, Dengue, Malaria and Polio (booster). As with anything medical, you should consult with your physician to make the best decision for your family.
AFRICA IS SOLELY A MUSLIM COUNTRY.
Basically, Islam dominates the North and East of the continent, while Christianity dominates the South and West, with other native and folk religions being scattered throughout. Christianity is the dominant religion in Ghana and of all of the African continent.
I hope I was able to enlighten y'all with this quick read. I didn't want to make this too long and this is certainly not all of the myths about Africa and Ghana. Please do yourself a favor and research for yourself anything anyone has to tell you. Even research what I have said here and never be complacent in accepting the "truths" of others. Question everything.
